To play tongits, three players get 12 cards (the dealer 13), draw and discard each turn, form melds of three or more, and call Tongits to go out first.
How to play tongits comes down to one habit: think in melds from your very first turn, not just when you’re close to going out. It’s one of two Filipino card games on the card games for money pillar on this site, and the higher-volume search of the pair.
How to Play Tongits: The Deal and First Turn
Here’s the full round, start to finish.
Three players sit in; the dealer receives 13 cards, the other two get 12 each.
The dealer’s discard, or the top of the stock pile, starts the draw.
On each turn: draw one card, then discard one — unless you can go out that turn.
Lay down any complete meld you’re holding, face-up, whenever you choose to.
Add cards to your own or an opponent’s exposed melds whenever you’re able to.
The first player to meld their entire hand and call Tongits ends the round.
Tongits Rules for Beginners: The Short Version
If you remember nothing else, remember these tongits rules for beginners.
Rule
What it means
Meld
3+ same rank, or 3+ running in one suit
Draw
Stock pile or top discard, your choice
Discard
One card, every turn you don’t go out
Fight (sabit)
Add a card to any exposed meld
Go out
Meld your whole hand in one turn, then call Tongits
Melds: Sets and Runs
Every meld in tongits is one of exactly two shapes.
Meld type
Example
Set
Three or more cards of the same rank — three 7s, for instance
Run
Three or more cards in sequence, one suit — 5-6-7 of Hearts
A meld only counts once it’s a complete set or run; two loose cards of the same rank sitting in your hand are not a meld until a third arrives, whether drawn or fought onto an exposed one.
Drawing, Discarding, Fighting and Dumping
Problem
You've drawn a card you can't use and don't know whether to discard it or hold it.
Fix
Fix: dump it. Holding a card that fits nothing in your hand only slows your own hand down and hands your opponents information about what you don’t have.
Problem
You have a card that matches an opponent's exposed meld, but you're not sure if you're allowed to use it.
Fix
Fix: you are — fighting (sabit) lets you add a matching card to any meld already laid face-up on the table, not just your own, as long as it’s your turn to act.
Calling Tongits to End the Round
Check that every card left in your hand fits into a complete meld.
Lay every remaining card down as melds, or as additions to melds already on the table.
Call Tongits the moment your hand is empty — this ends the round immediately.
The other players’ remaining cards are counted against them once the round closes.
Tongits Strategy for Your First Real Session
Problem
You keep discarding cards early that turn out to be exactly what an opponent needed.
Fix
Fix: dump high, hard-to-use cards — face cards and off-suit odd numbers — early, while your opponents’ hands are still forming, rather than late when a discard is more likely to complete someone else’s meld.
Holding a completed meld back for one extra turn, rather than laying it down the instant it’s ready, is the other half of real tongits strategy — it keeps opponents guessing about how close you are to calling Tongits.
Tongits vs Pusoy Dos: Two Filipino Card Games
Tongits and pusoy dos are both Filipino card games decided by who finishes first, built around different mechanics.

FAQ
Tongits rules for beginners — what's the very first thing to learn?
A meld: three or more cards of the same rank, or three or more cards running in sequence in the same suit. Nearly every other rule — drawing, discarding, fighting, going out — is about building or breaking melds, so this is the one concept worth learning before anything else.
How many players does tongits need?
Three is standard, with the dealer receiving 13 cards and the other two players 12 each. The rules below describe the standard three-player round.
What does 'fighting' or 'sabit' mean in tongits?
Adding one of your own cards to a meld that's already been laid face-up on the table — yours or an opponent's — instead of holding it in hand. It's how a hand that looks incomplete can still empty quickly once other melds are already exposed.
Is there a real tongits strategy or is it just the draw?
The draw sets your hand, but sequencing what you keep, discard and expose decides who goes out first. Holding a near-complete meld back one turn to bait an opponent's discard, or dumping high, hard-to-use cards early rather than late, is where most of the real decision-making sits.
What happens to unmelded cards when someone calls Tongits?
The cards still sitting in the other players' hands count against them, which is why finishing your hand fast is worth more than sitting on an almost-complete meld. Open the round's own scoring screen for the exact count once a hand ends.
